The end of Big Fish is a great one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCbdX92hbbg

Beautiful Girls is another great one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4EFvtceT1U

In both cases, it really ties together the theme of the movie. In Big Fish, how a person can become his stories. In Beautiful Girls, the lure of the false promise of the pretty girl.

Since I'm on a Bergman kick today, I nominate Wild Strawberries.

The title is mentioned several times throughout the film, but this is the first scene that actually takes place at "Smultronstället" - the original title of the film, which literally means "the wild strawberry place." The word can also mean a place where you go to relax or reminisce or a place that has special meaning to you.

Isak: Sara. Sara, it's your cousin Isak. I've become a little old, of course, and do not quite look as I used to. But you, you haven't changed the slightest bit.

Sigfrid: Good morning, sweet cousin. What are you doing?

Sara: Picking wild strawberries, silly. Can't you see?

Sigfrid: And who shall be favored with these tasty berries, picked in the early morn by a lovely young woman?

Sara: Nonsense. You know quite well that it's Uncle Aron's name day today. I forgot to make a present for him. So, he gets a basket of wild strawberries instead. That's good enough, isn't it?

The Breakfast Club;
Brian Johnson: Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain...
Andrew Clark: ...and an athlete...
Allison Reynolds: ...and a basket case...
Claire Standish: ...a princess...
John Bender: ...and a criminal...
Brian Johnson: Does that answer your question?... Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

Groundhog Day (1993)

D.J. #1: Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today.
D.J. #2: It's coooold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach?
D.J. #1: Not hardly. And you know, you can expect hazardous travel later today with that, you know, that, uh, that blizzard thing.
D.J. #2: [mockingly] That blizzard - thing. That blizzard - thing. Oh, well, here's the report! The National Weather Service is calling for a "big blizzard thing!"
D.J. #1: Yessss, they are. But you know, there's another reason why today is especially exciting.
D.J. #2: Especially cold!
D.J. #1: Especially cold, okay, but the big question on everybody's lips...
D.J. #2: - On their chapped lips...
D.J. #1: - On their chapped lips, right: Do ya think Phil is gonna come out and see his shadow?
D.J. #2: Punxsutawney Phil!
D.J. #1: That's right, woodchuck-chuckers - it's...
D.J. #1, D.J. #2: [in unison] GROUNDHOG DAY!

Fight Club;
Tyler Durden: Welcome to Fight Club. The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club! Third rule of Fight Club: if someone yells "stop!", goes limp, or taps out, the fight is over. Fourth rule: only two guys to a fight. Fifth rule: one fight at a time, fellas. Sixth rule: the fights are bare knuckle. No shirt, no shoes, no weapons. Seventh rule: fights will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

The Color Purple;
Shug: More than anything God love admiration.
Celie: You saying God is vain?
Shug: No, not vain, just wanting to share a good thing. I think it pisses God off when you walk by the colour purple in a field and don't notice it.
Celie: You saying it just wanna be loved like it say in the bible?
Shug: Yeah, Celie. Everything wanna be loved. Us sing and dance, and holla just wanting to be loved. Look at them trees. Notice how the trees do everything people do to get attention... except walk?
[they laugh]
Shug: Oh Miss Celie, I feels like singing!

On The Waterfront (1954) Karl Malden as father Barry.

FATHER BARRY: I came down here to keep a promise. I gave Kayo my word that if he stood up to the Mob l'd stand up with him... all the way. And now Kayo Dugan is dead. He was one of those fellows who had the gift for standing up. But this time they fixed him. They fixed him for good this time, unless it was an accident... like Big Mac says. Some people think the Crucifixion only took place on Calvary. They better wise up. Taking Joey Doyle's life to stop him from testifying is a crucifixion. Dropping a sling on Kayo Dugan because he was ready to spill his guts tomorrow... that's a crucifixion. And every time the mob puts the crusher on a good man, tries to stop him from doing his duty as a citizen, it's a crucifixion. And anybody who sits around and lets it happen, keeps silent about something he knows has happened, shares the guilt of it just as much as the Roman soldier who pierced the flesh of Our Lord to see if He was dead.

TRUCK: Go back to your church, Father!

FATHER BARRY: Boys, this is my church! And if you don't think Christ is down here on the waterfront you've got another guess coming!

I prefer titles in dialogue that are surreptitious, that just blend in and aren't foregrounded.

From Total Recall:

Richter: We can't let him run around. He knows too much.
Vilos Cohaagen: Lori says he can't remember jack shit!
Richter: That's now. In an hour, he could have total recall.

Walk The Line
June: I’m going home after the show. I am not her to keep after you.
Johnny: You’re not?
June: You got someone to do that, John. You got a wife somewhere, don’t you?
Johnny: What if I didn’t?
June: Too many ifs in that sentence,
Johnny: Only one if in that sentence, June!
(June throws bottle)
All: Ahh!
Johnny: WE SURRENDER, WE SURRENDER!
June: What was I thinkin’? I must be crazy! You’re just like the rest of them. You don’t care. You’re all gonna’ blow the tour. You can’t walk no line!
Jerry Lee: June-Bug we ain’t blowin’ the tour!
June: I am not gonna’ be that dutch boy with my finger in the dam no more!
Johnny: You’re lyin’ to yourself if you thing this is about a tour honey! This isn’t about a tour! This isn’t about a song!
Johnny(singing): I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine,
I walk the line. As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

I really loved how they handled it in this movie. The title is so ridiculous, I remember being in the theatre and in the movie, they're all speculating as to what the hell is going on- and you just wanted someone to say it, just SAY IT- we all know what it is- but knew.. nono they couldn't possibly - so I thought in this comedic performance (and for some reason breaking the 4th wall, didn't set off the mood, but only hightened it) was in Hot Tub Time Machine.

imdb:
Nick: It must be some kind of hot tub time machine...

Isn't it interesting how writers work movie titles into dialogue? And some work better than others. Some great examples here. What other examples are there?
Teddy Pasternak at 2011-07-04 23:14:33:
@Scott - interesting indeed. However, I'd be curious to know how many of these started with the title and then were worked into the dialogue and vice versa.

Fight Club, The Breakfast Club, Hot Tub Time Machine - they all sound like the title came first.

The Color Purple, Full Metal Jacket, On The Waterfront? Hmm... those sound like they could have originated in the dialogue and then chosen as the titles.
Scott at 2011-07-04 23:29:36:
@Teddy: Your comment caused me to think back on the 20+ movie projects I've written for studios. And I can't think of one where I received a note to include the movie title in dialogue.

If it doesn't arise naturally via the characters within the context of the story, what's the point anyhow? Not like it's going to add to box office revenues.
Teddy Pasternak at 2011-07-04 23:39:25:
@Scott - You're right, there's no point, really. Unless they want it in the trailer for comedic effect or something. "I'm Paul Blart: Mall Cop!"

That worked great for Hot Tub Time Machine. It seemed like that shot with the breaking of the fourth wall was made only for the trailer.

Here's a classic:

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (1958) - Paul Newman as Brick Pollitt and Elizabeth Taylor as Maggie Pollitt.

Maggie: If I thought you'd never never make love to me again, I'd find me the longest, sharpest knife and stick it straight into my heart. I'd do that. Oh Brick, how long does this have to go on, this punishment? Haven't I served my term? Can't I apply for a pardon?

Brick: Lady, that finishing-school voice sounds like you were running upstairs to tell someone the house was on fire.

Maggie: Is it any wonder? You know what I feel like? I feel all the time like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Brick: Then jump off the roof, Maggie. Jump off it. Cats jump off roofs and land uninjured. Do it. Jump.
