I'd like to offer a point about research, which is that frequently you don't know what you need to know until you start writing. I write spy fiction and historical fiction and so many times I'll come across a situation where my character will be in a place, and I won't know what they'd say or do or how they'd get out of it, and so then I'll go back and use this situation as a research point, and I'll realize that, well, maybe it would have happened totally differently to begin with. So I view research as an ongoing, active, branching activity, not just one phase of a project that's open and closed.

(Obviously, there will be times when I just want to sit and read a book straight through, but often as I'm reading, I'll come across something that I know just HAS to be in a story, and that can lead to a character, then I forget about the book entirely.)
