Quite an appropriate post...

As I remember my own father, who passed away November 09, I remember how much he loved HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG (mostly, I think, because of how he tricked my mother - who only does "happy movies" - into watching it and how she cursed out the two of us and left the room when one of the characters is killed), and how much he loved Dubus Sr.'s IN THE BEDROOM - a source of endless "arguments" between the two of us. And he found it neat that I was able to talk to Dubus 3 at some Boston area Q&A's.

And I remember how much my Dad wanted to see my own screenplay get made. We didn't see eye-to-eye philosophically, and certainly not theologically, but he really liked what I wrote (unfortunately he never did see the 3rd and 4th drafts that did well and got some interest and a few reads). It was the greatest compliment of my life - and I often feel like sh*t that I'm not doing more to honor that fact (that it was something he liked) and do all I can with that story and other stories I have.

Wow, I've just guilt-tripped myself. Damn Italian genes...

@RonC: My father in the fall of 2003. Like you and your father, we weren't anywhere close in alignment per politics, theology, world view, but he admired my ability to write and my "courage" - his word - to follow my creative aspirations. I admired him for many reasons, one of which is his involvement in the Berlin Airlift (he flew 200 missions), the largest single peacekeeping effort in the history of the world. I wrote an original screenplay inspired by it, a project to which Wolfgang Petersen was at one time attached. Although the movie never got made, I was able to share that script with my father before he died. I'm thankful for that.
