How about trickery? Deception.
Francisco Magdaraog at 2011-05-14 15:31:34:
Double entendres are always fun. I'd like to throw another suggestion into the pot, though: prayers.

Election has a great one. In fact, three, from three characters.

Tracy Flick: Dear Lord Jesus, I do not often speak with you and ask for things, but now, I really must insist that you help me win the election tomorrow because I deserve it and Paul Metzler doesn't, as you well know. I realize that it was your divine hand that disqualified Tammy Metzler and now I'm asking that you go that one last mile and make sure to put me in office where I belong so that I may carry out your will on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Tammy Metzler: Dear God, I know I don't believe in you, but since I'll be starting catholic school soon, I though I should at least practice. Let's see. What do I want? I want Lisa to realize what a bitch she is and feel really bad and apologize for how she hurt me and know how much I still love her. In spite of everything, I still want Paul to win the election tomorrow, not that cunt Tracy. Oh, and I also want a really expensive pair of leather pants and someday, I wanna be really good friends with Madonna. Love, Tammy.

Paul Metzler: Dear God, than you for all your blessings. You've given me so many things, like good health, nice parents, a nice truck, and what I'm told is a large penis, and I'm very grateful, but I sure am worried about Tammy. In my heart, I still can't believe she tore down my posters, but sometimes, she does get so weird and angry. Please help her be a happier person because she's so smart and sensitive and I love her so much. Also, I'm nervous about the election tomorrow and I guess I want to win and all, but I know that's totally up to you. You'll decide who the best person is and I'll accept it. And forgive me for my sins, whatever they may be. Amen.

Some good 'uns! I'm casting my vote for "rationalizations of bad behavior," though.
Scott at 2011-05-14 16:02:05:
@Francisco: Ooh, prayers is a good one. Serious ones, funny ones, frightened ones, desperate ones.
Scott at 2011-05-14 16:02:48:
DeafEars: I like the idea of rationalizations for bad behavior, but what are some good examples?
Scott at 2011-05-14 16:03:09:
Maurice: Deception is interesting. Examples?
Maurice Vaughan at 2011-05-14 16:46:30:
From "The Usual Suspects":

Kobayashi: Mr. Redfoot knew nothing. Mr. Soze rarely works with the same people for very long, and they never know who they're working for. One cannot be betrayed if one has no people.

Fenster: So why are you telling us?

Kobayashi: Because you have stolen from Mr.Soze, Mr Fenster. All of you. That you did not know you stole from him is the only reason you are still alive. He feels you owe him. You will repay your debt.

Hockney: All right, fuck the debt. And fuck you! How do we know you work for Soze?

Kobayashi: I don't think that is very relevant, Mr Hockney. All five of you are responsible for the murder of Saul Berg and his bodyguards. Mr. Redfoot can testify to your involvement, and we can see to it that he will.

I consider this deceptive because the twist at the end of the movie. That and Kobayashi avoids Hockney's question about him knowing Keyser Soze by reminding the five suspects that they're in no position to ask questions. There should be more deceptive movies out there. Maybe I'll write one.

Another one from "The Dark Knight":

Two-Face: It was your men, your plan!

The Joker: Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just... do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon's got plans. You know, they're schemers. Schemers trying to control their little worlds. I'm not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So, when I say... Ah, come here.

[takes Dent's hand into his own]

The Joker: When I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I'm telling the truth. It's the schemers that put you where you are. You were a schemer, you had plans, and look where that got you.

[Dent tries to grab the Joker]

The Joker: I just did what I do best. I took your little plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hmmm? You know... You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan." But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!

[Joker hands Two-Face a gun and points it at himself]

The Joker: Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It's fair!

[still holding the gun, Two-Face pauses and takes out his coin]

Two-Face: [showing the unscarred side] You live.

The Joker: Mm-hmm.

Two-Face: [flips, showing the scarred side] You die.

The Joker: Mmm, now we're talking.

a rationalization for bad behavior from

DINER (1982) written and directed by Barry Levinson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARvdUBkNoDU
dialogue begins @3:30

Boogie (Mickey Rourke) tries to placate his date Carol after tricking her into touching his cock.

BOOGIE: Would you hold on a second?
CAROL: You are disgusting!
BOOGIE: Now look, I know it was really terrible, it was - it was horrible and all, but it was an accident.
CAROL: An accident?!
BOOGIE: Oh Carol, seriously, it was an accident, I swear to God.
CAROL: An accident. Your thing just got into a box of popcorn.
BOOGIE: Well, damn near that.
DeafEars at 2011-05-15 12:36:52:
They leave the bathroom.
BOOGIE: Baby, can I be straight with you?
CAROL: Boogie -
BOOGIE: Well, look, there's a real good reason, you know, but it's like - it's a little embarrassing to me. I mean, so maybe if you don't want to hear it, I'll understand.
CAROL: Go on, I wanna hear this.
BOOGIE: Well - I dunno, I just - you know I don't like to tell this to girls, but you know, you really are - you really are a knockout.
Carol scoffs and turns away.
BOOGIE: No, you really are! And you know, sitting down next to you in there got me crazy. I got a hard-on. You know, I mean, I don't like to admit it, but I did.... I mean, you don't know me, I, uh, you know, I don't, I try to come off like I'm being cool all the time. You know, I don't like to look like I'm hustling, and there I was sitting next to you with a boner. You know, I don't - am I embarrassing you?
CAROL: Go on.
DeafEars at 2011-05-15 12:37:29:
BOOGIE: I dunno, it's just that the pain was killing me, you know, it was, it was to stop the pain, it was digging in the side of my leg. So what I did was, you know, I opened my fly to loosen everything up, just to give it a little air. And uh, you know, it worked. Everything settle down, and then I got, you know, caught back up in the picture. And then, uh - you know that's when Sandra got her leg caught on the, on the bush, and she lifted up her dress. You know, it just popped right out and went through the bottom of the popcorn box! And the force of it just, just opened up the flap.
CAROL: It just pushed the flap open?
BOOGIE: It's Ripley's, I'm telling ya, it just pushed the flap right open, and I couldn't move the box - you know, you was in it.
CAROL: That's true.
BOOGIE: C'mon. Let's go back inside. OK?
CAROL: OK.

So here's the thing. Deception, rationalizations, both interesting themes. But the thing is, I have to come up with seven examples to do a week's worth of DD posts. That's a combination of what GITS readers suggest and what pops into my head. We have a couple of suggestions so far per these two themes, but I'm struggling to come up with examples myself.

OTOH prayers, I've got a dozen of those in my memory cells already. Plus we have several suggestions. So unless some other folks weigh in with deception or rationalization examples, I'm prepared to go with prayers for next week.

Consider the gauntlet thrown!
