I hadn't had a chance to really look at this diagram until today, but I think the biggest impact was made with Photoshop. It is so pervasive that many, many computer users who have nothing to do with the arts think of it as critical software, even if they never do anything more than remove red eye.

My wife uses Photoshop for design and illustration related to her architectural work. I use it to clean up overhead photos used for property assessments and to add details such as noise contours. And our daughter AJ uses it to clean up and colorize every image for the comics she writes before posting them online.

One other related influence is Star Wars lending its title to the U.S. Department of Defense’s Missile Defense program. Until the name was put into use the explanations for the program concept were lengthy and difficult for laymen to understand. Once the name was borrowed, the description shrank to just the two words and everybody immediately understood the concept beyond just defending against missiles.
