The "Foreward" to the published screenplay is a hoot to read! He's quite a character in and of himself!

John, evidently Nabokov was NOT happy with the many changes from his script in the movie, and that was a major reason why he had the script published - so people could see how he'd adapted his novel.

Nabokov's screenplay is lovely. Perhaps a bit too long, but stronger than either Kubrick's or Lyne's adaptations of his magnificent novel.

The novel is one of the most jaw-dropping displays of virtuosity with the English language that I've ever encountered. That it's in service of a story about "a desperate pervert and a wretched child" [VN's words from the Foreward...] has always been one of the great head-scratchers for me.

But reading his description of the development process and getting a sense of his personal voice, character and quirks as he describes real events and people...sorta opens up room for understanding where that choice came from.

Disappointing, Google. Cannot read this book if you're outside the U.S. it seems ("preview not available"). Always jarring to hit an artificial fence erected in the global village.
