I'd probably go with a more supernatural/sci-fi/time travel angle. But the general idea does remind me of the Martin Short & Danny Glover film "Pure Luck" (1991)

The Cooler meets Being There...not sure it's a studio pitch, but it gets my vote.

How about... Finding Nemo meets The Day After Tomorrow?

Dude has lost nearly his entire family to terrorist attacks, seemingly can't leave the house without stepping into a deadly crisis.

Only his daughter is left. Won't let her leave the tiny midwestern town they now live in, but of course, she wants to see the world. Go to college in a big city. Travel. He's terrified if he lets her go, she'll get killed by the family curse.

She disobeys him, sneaks on a plane to Egypt or Greece or wherever. Then, of course, tragedy strikes again and he has to go save her but learns a valuable lesson about letting her grow up or something.

Have to say there is something intriguing about a character who is touched by bad luck. The Cooler is a good reference point, but you could go much bigger with this story.

Since the bad luck angle was done so well in The Cooler, wouldn't it be more interesting to go with someone who has good luck? What would that person be worth, and what kind of people might come after him?

@William: Absolutely you could switch the dynamic so the person had good luck. Re The Cooler: Good movie, but low visibility (not much B.O.). Plus with 'similar but different' mindset in Hwood and the opportunity to go much bigger with the story than Cooler, feels like there is an opportunity to explore a story where person is stuck with bad luck.
