Mentioning Bull Durham in this context reminds me of something William Goldman (I think) wrote, that audiences like to see how things work. Which relates to both concept and characters. For some reason, seeing someone go through the day-to-day routine of a job that isn't yours (like minor league baseball) is damned interesting.
