A great book about Dr. Minor is Simon Winchester's "The Professor and the Madman." At one point Mel Gibson was planning to make the movie.

I was thinking you could go straight historical with this, too, and not have to dress it up with supernatural brouhaha. It's interesting enough in the flesh.
