The Bitter Script Reader at 2011-04-05 11:56:52:
The story of WITHIN sounded so familiar that I was convinced I read it for one of my employers last year. In going back, I see the script I read had a different title, so it's likely not the same project.

It does kind of show that the "_____ from hell" genre runs the risk of simultaneous development. I've had one such idea for several years now and not gotten around to writing it, so I'm just waiting for someone to beat me to the punch.

I learned in a sociology class that, in the handful of years after Fatal Attraction was released, American men had statistically fewer affairs. Can't remember the numbers, but the rate plunged, and the people who study this stuff attribute it to the impact of the film on our mass psyche. That movie scared the crap out of guys.

@Annika: I remember reading articles about Fatal Attraction when it came out that it was the perfect date movie. Guys got to fantasize about having an affair and gals got to jab their mates in the side and say, "See, that's what you'll get if you screw around on me!"

There are several "Boss From Hell" films: Swimming With Sharks, The Devil Wears Prada, 9 To 5, but I believe in all of these the boss is "hell" from the beginning. They don't start out normal and then turn evil.

Single White Female/The Roommate - The roommate from hell.

Lakeview Terrace/Unlawful Entry - The cop from hell.

A little different, but I think it still fits:

The War of the Roses -- the marriage from hell (in that it plays out a lot like a "from hell" movie, just without a clear guilty party... the relationship itself is what's from hell).

'Play Misty For Me', one of the best of the bunch.

Watched it again last month, holds up very well, and (at least for me) has a lot more going for it than any of the current models.

Misery - The fan from Hell. Sunset Boulevard - the patron from hell. All About Eve - the assistant/fan from hell.
