I was listening to the Creative Screenwriting podcast of Jeff Goldsmith's interview of Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy about 127 Hours. When asked about advice to first time screenwriters, Boyle (who wrote the first draft – his first as a screenwriter - and directed the movie) essentially said his observation was that Beaufoy took his epic script and turned it into a lean script. It was much easier and much more enjoyable to read and direct.
The same advice as Walter Hill but coming from a director, Oscar winner and first time screenwriter.
