Watched this last night. Intriguing characters, all with different personalities and facing real-life situations.

Steve – understood the need to have a marketable idea. He was honest with himself and others, and loved the cool parts of being involved in the industry, but didn’t appear to get caught up in it. He was like a kid in a candy store when he was checking out the sets and watching the crew members go about their business. This is how I picture it to be when you finally sell your first script.

Joe – seems pretty content with life, whether he’s successful or not. Which is good because it appears his projects are mostly vanity pieces. And either his wife doesn’t want to be on camera, or she really hates him. That restaurant scene was uncomfortable. It reminded me that those who don’t write really have no idea why we do it. My own wife doesn’t understand why I get up at 5 a.m. She figures I’m just wasting time on the computer. She might be right.

Deborah – she wasn’t portrayed as particularly hard-working, and coincidentally couldn’t get a break. Her teaser (the 10 seconds they showed of it) was boring. I wish they had showed more of her struggle as a writer – rather than focus so much on her meetings.

Lesson learned for me was that I need to work harder. There are probably countless others out there working as hard or harder than these 3.

TT: Thanks for that analysis of the movie, especially for those too busy to screen it. And that's probably as good a lesson to take away from any thing screenwriting related: Work harder!
