Amazing. Three thoughts:

1) Everyone should read Conversations with Wilder.

2) Sabrina is the greatest romantic comedy ever made (even if It Happened One Night is the Rosetta Stone of the genre).

3) The man made a fortune off his art collection, which he gathered according to taste, not fad, and found success in a number of genres and with a number of writing partners. Perhaps one of the lessons of Wilder is that good taste is irreplaceable.

Amos, agreed re "Conversations with Wilder." Tremendous read. If there's been a better, more prolific filmmaker, especially in terms of the breadth of story genres and subject matter Wilder handled, I'm not sure who that might be.

If you haven't seen Wilder's acceptance speech for the Irving Thalberg Award, it's a must-see. Great biographical story about how his life was in the balance -- whether he could get the proper documentation to stay in the U.S. or be forced back to Germany and face being shipped off to concentration camps. Turns out the American consul was a movie fan. That video is here.
