I love Annie Hall but when it comes to Allen's screenwriting, the movie that impresses me most is Crimes & Misdemeanors (1989). I'd love to see discussion of that script on this blog - it handles dual narratives in such a compelling way that I'm sure we all have something to learn from it.

@Kenneth: You've given me an idea. Choose a movie a month. We all watch it. Then analyze it on the blog. Maybe start with Crimes & Misdemeanors. Haven't seen that in years, but recall it's a terrific film.

That sounds great!

Allen is one of those writers who can get away with a lot of non-formula stuff that would stick out in most other genre screenwriting as "wrong", and imho it is because he has created a whole universe for his characters, where we have always a minimum orientation. So even his worst films are more entertaining on a certain level than a lot of average genre films, because we sense a world behind it. Hope my English is good enough to bring my point across, Best, Armin from Berlin
