I immediately thought of the phone conversation between George, Mary, and Sam in "It's a Wonderful Life."

Taking introductions literally, "As Good As It Gets" has a great moment when Melvin introduces Carol to Simon: "Carol the waitress, Simon the fag." Completely awful, but it works coming from a total a-hole.

Phone conversations. And one that jumped to mind is the big one Redford has in All the President's Men...

Found it.

It's one shot, with a super slow push in on him over, like, 3 and half minutes.

I'll try and think of some others.

Ohh. Neo on the phone with Morpheus for the first time. Walks him out to the ledge, and all that.

Phone conversations are good. I immediately think of the opening scene in the first Scream.

Phone Voice: What's your favorite scary movie?
Casey: I dunno.
Phone Voice: You have to have a favorite, what comes to mind?
Casey: Um, Halloween. You know the guy in the white mask who walks around and stalks babysitters?
Phone Voice: Yeah...
Casey: What's yours?
Phone Voice: Guess.
Casey: Um, Nightmare On Elm Street?
Phone Voice: Is that the one where the guy had knives for fingers?
Casey: Yeah, Freddy Krueger.
Phone Voice: Freddy! That's right. I like that movie, it was scary.
Casey: Well, the first one was, but the rest sucked.

Billy Bob Thorton's half-time speech at the end of Friday Night Lights is, for my money, the greatest sports talk ever put on film. I'd call that movie the best football movie ever made, too, but that speech. The entire last 20 minutes of that movie never fails to make me cry.

"Boys, my heart is full."

I'd win a Super Bowl for that talk.

From Miracle (2004)

COACH BROOKS: Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with 'em. Tonight, we stay with 'em. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey. Every one of you. You were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em! This is your time!... Now go out there and take it.

The part where he says "If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight" is the kernel, and the unique hook of this particular speech, and what really jumped out at me about this one.

Miracle is a great movie. This was the most memorable scene in the film. Actually, one of the most memorable in any sports movie I've ever seen:

And now for something completely different, from Meatballs:

TRIPPER: That's just the attitude we don't need. Sure, Mohawk has beaten us twelve years in a row. Sure they're terrific athletes. Sure they've got the best equipment. Sure, every team they're sending over here has their own personal masseuse. Not masseur, masseuse. But it doesn't matter. Do you know that every Mohawk competitor has an electrocardiogram, blood and urine test every forty-eight hours to see if there's a change in his physical condition? Do you know they use the most sophisticated training methods from the Soviet Union, East and West Germany, and the newest Olympic power, Trinidad and Tobago? But it doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter! I tell you it just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter!

CROWD:
(chanting)
It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter!

TRIPPER: And even if we win - if we win, ha! Even if we win, even if we play so far over our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days, even if God in heaven above comes down and points his hand at our side of the field, even if every man, woman, and child held hands together and prayed for us to win, it just wouldn't matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk 'cause they got all the money! It just doesn't matter if we win or we lose! It just doesn't matter!

CROWD:
(chanting)
It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter! It just doesn't matter!
