"Before any aspiring TV writer starts pounding out one original spec pilot after another, note that the projects in play at the broadcast network level are all ones written by established writers. If you're an outsider, you may have the greatest spec TV pilot ever, but that doesn't necessarily translate into a deal."
Hmmm... I'm incredibly superstitious, so I don't want to get into too much detail -- but that's not entirely true :).
It's definitely much harder as an unknown, no doubt.
There is definitely a drive for new content from fresh voices all over. Particularly in TV. While it's not the typical story, IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA did exactly the impossible.
Also -- as far as spec pilots go -- I've yet to have anyone ask for a spec of a pre-existing show. But am constantly hounded for original spec pilots.
There's a general hunger for new, original, and exciting material out there.
