When I read "My Left Foot" and reached the moment that the paralyzed Protag used his left foot to scrawl the word "mother," spontaneous tears flew down my face. Recalling that surprising moment evokes the same emotion today ... as I just discovered.

Judy and Sojourner: There are so many reasons to draw inspiration from Sheridan's quote, but perhaps for me the biggest is it points us as writers squarely into the mysteries of our stories. So much of what we do in trying to wrangle a story is pull together plot, stitch together our understanding of characters, work and rework dialogue, and so forth. All utterly necessary and not to be diminished. But what we are also looking for is that invisible quality of a story -- subtext, meaning, emotion -- that exist (in the best stories) above, below, inside, and outside of the actual pages we write.

It's magic, it's mystery... and it's most definitely invisible.
