I scampered over to the midnight premier screening of this thing because I was so enamored by the energy of the trailer.
Well, lordy sakes, if not for the 98 ounce coffee stein I smuggled in, I would have been snoozing in my stadium seat by reel number 3. I was flabbergasted by how flat and drab it was. What a sad missed opportunity. The thing is, the opening 20 minutes or so is a terrific set up. But the midsection? Wow. Sagged like a wet diaper.
I was a fan of the original TRON. It's a daffy flick with some great visuals, very indicative of 80's live action Disney. I didn't need this thing to be earth shattering or ground breaking... but good lord, how 'bout giving us a reason to give a $h!t about anything or anyone, huh? Talk about "Act 2 problems." Whoa.
And, um, while we're on the subject... perhaps it was just my multiplex here in the wilds of Wisconsin but... the 3-D??? Are you kidding? Added nothing. Which really bummed me out. I'm not a fan of this cinematic kool-aid the studios are lobbing at us, 3-D died around the time of Vincent Price and House of Wax but... I figured TRON would be a TERRIFIC vehicle for some true 3-D pyrotechnics.
Nope. Besides offering a tad more "viewmaster" like depth, nothing.
(in fact, the Green Hornet trailer at the outset had more 3-D hijinks then ALL of Tron: Legacy....)
So, yeah, ultimately a disappointment. Just in that it was so much damned wasted potential, y'know?
