Actually this is great news. I love Roger Corman's work and his New World Pictures output from the 70's and 80's. Their films had a trashy charm with smart scripts.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go write a script called Cockroachasaurus Rex or something...

News that companies are giving writers a chance to get work made is is always good news.

The Creative Screenwriting podcast covered doing SyFy's films in one called "Genre Writing for TV". It's a damn funny Q&A too.

Thanks, Richard, for that link. Syfy had an initiative, I believe, like 6-8 years ago where they were commissioning a series of really low budget movies to air on Fri and Sat nites, with a limited international theatrical release. If you're a fan of the network, I'm sure you remember some of the titles. This is different than that reversing the order: theatrical first, then traditional movie ancillary platforms.

One of the writers in the podcast mentioned a list of "Sci-Fi Film Commandments" (eg "The black guy is not killed first" and "No-one talks with the monster"). I found that link trying to find them.

I like the SyFy channel for making so much original content, but I don't get to see any of it, being in the UK and not being able to afford the cable package it's carried on (about $90 a month). The initiative rings a bell though.
