I truly hate columns with this moral-of-the-story. Concept is key! Yes, yes, I couldn't agree more. But I have a spec with a crazy concept and no one will read it. How crazy you ask? My script describes a REAL LIFE pseudo-medical technique that could make you immortal. Lemme say that again...in my screenplay is something that could help you defeat death. Help all humans live forever.

But will anyone take the time to give it a glance - nope. Not on your life (terrible pun).

And she's a tight, well rounded 117 page thriller with impeccable formatting, structure, pace - plus the characters are thick onions. So I grit my teeth over blog posts like this and continue to tell myself that every great script finds a home.

You could have terminal cancer, be reading this and I bet you'd not have an ounce of faith to believe me and give the first 10 pages a try.

But concept is key!

Rob, where have you sent the script? Are there any movies that are even vaguely similar in terms of tone or genre? If so, you can find out who their producers are, use Hollywood Creative Directory or Google to find out their contact information, and query them directly. As noted in a thread yesterday, producers are less intransigent in terms of The Wall than studios, and even most managers and agents.

I've used the Creative Directory, Google, Inktip, yelling from rooftops...even smoke signals and nothing works. The belief I have is that outsiders rarely get work read by Hollywood gatekeepers.

However, a small time producer in Toronto read it recently as a writing sample and loves the concept, but wants to scrap the religious aspect. I propose that Jesus was the first person to discover this technique of rebirth allowing him and his apostles to walk among us in today's society. It's that controversial angle (of how Jesus was really resurrected) that I believe makes the film edgy.

Tone-wise, it's somewhat similar to DA VINCI CODE with a dash of Kiefer Sutherland's 24 mixed in. The opening scene parallels THE MATRIX - the closing scene reflects a post apocalyptic world reminiscent of THE ROAD.

I think my point is being made though this comment thread. Your site gets large amounts of hits - my comment must have been read by others and yet no one even asks me about my technique for cheating death. It's too unbelievable.

I'm interested! That's a hell of a high concept. Tell me more! Email me at lance621 (at) yahoo (dot com). Hang in there. Have you tried contests? If it's truly a well-written screenplay, it'll get attention and it will get read.
