Further trivia - There were four or five completely different takes on Star Trek II at the script stage. There was even a version that didn't include Khan! When he was brought on as director, Nick Meyer combed through all the scripts with producer Harve Bennett and cherry-picked everything they liked, from plot elements to dialogue lines.
The problem: they had 12 days to get a new draft to Shatner for his approval or the project was dead - but the different drafts were so radically different from each other that none painted an accurate picture of their vision.
So Nick Meyer wrote a hybrid draft of all of these disparate ideas in just 12 days. Shatner approved it and that's what was shot.
Supposedly, Nick earned the nickname "The 12-Day Wonder" after that.
