Deathly Hallows Pt 1 is the first HP movie that I have been impressed by. I honestly don't think anything until now is worthy of much oscar buzz, and this installment is still iffy in those regards. Maybe they'll pull a Return of the King and dish out some gold to Deathly Hallows Pt 2 in honor of the whole series.

Just because the franchise is popular doesn't mean that it deserves Oscars... They're given out for excellence and each year there are movies with better actors, stories, and direction than Harry Potter.

Return of the King was definitely one of the best that year and rightfully so that it won.

Not saying HP is worthy or not. Was just watching The Wizard of Oz. Man, what a great, fun, film. And a musical that has you singing the songs.

It was up for Best picture.

Good genre flicks shouldn't be discounted simply for being a genre flick. They weren't in the past.

While the Oscars have always favored dramas, something about the advent of independent films as a genre (early 90sish) has really seen a separation between big box office pictures and the Oscars. And genre films have largely been snubbed.

Last year was a step in the right direction. With 10 nominees the field has broadened.

The irony is -- its done because it is financially viable to exclude the box-office monsters. Winning an Oscar won't do much for a blockbuster in terms of generating additional revenue, but it often helps indy films that didn't get a wide release.

There's nothing altruistic about the Oscars favoring the little guy. It's all done for ca$h.

It's for the cash and the people in Hollywood still want to make themselves believe that what they make is art. And big box office gross is usually not considered great art but just a commercial product. I can sort of understand these guys. They don't want the world to watch them patting their own backs for sacking another year of surfing in the Money Bin. So it's the season, that one time of the year where HWood pretends to present the world with the gift of culture and art.

Harry Potter might be just a novelty to the voters. Costume design is a huge one, HP should definitely have an Oscar in that category. The films rely heavily on the young main characters...I understand the lack of statues for them, but Alan Rickman could have some mantle pieces for his work in the series.

All in all, I honestly didn't even think about HP with an Oscar until I read this. Maybe it has been overlooked accidentally. If Warners cared they would put it up for more Oscar buzz but I assume they would rather line their pockets than fill their trophy case with HP.

The Deathly Hallows Pt 1 was a lackluster film. The characters spent a great deal of time wandering in the forest with occasional bursts of drama. Will the series continue to be overlooked by the Oscars? Yes, because it is primarily children's entertainment, and accomplishes little in terms of satisfying the adult cinematic palette of Academy judges.

Why no Oscars?

How about amateurish storyline, flat characters, blatant exposition, huge plot holes, lack of motivation?...

The first movie was all right, but only that; every addition to the franchise since has been a poorer product than the one preceding it.

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating HP deserves Oscars. Just thought it was an interesting article.
