Man did I need this post today... once again, GITS to the rescue. Much appreciated!

nicely put, Scott.

Awesome post. What famous writer had over their typewriter, "No one ever asked you to be a writer?"

As an extension of being around people who feel they deserve a certain level of success, one of William Munny's last lines from Unforgiven comes to mind:

"Deserves got nothing to do with it."

(Which is almost short enough to be nominated for Daily D. this week.)

@Jeff: Must've been something in the air last night.

@csekeris: Thanks. Hope your new prod co venture is successful!

@Martin: I Googled that, but couldn't find a source. Are you sure you didn't come up with that yourself? T-shirt worthy!

@Annika: Great line, great movie.

Myers, you are a class act all the way and you set a stellar example. Rest assured, nobody who regularly reads this blog is going to get the wrong impression of you or of what it takes to move forward in this business.

@Mike: Thanks for your comments. I never claim to know it all. Just the little slice of screenwriting success and distress I have experienced personally. Hopefully folks will take away something from my musings.

Good post - important bit of learning for young writers and an important reminder for experienced writers. What I take from this is: "Write because it makes you happy and not because you're waiting for Hollywood to make you the next big thing."

Funny thing is I just wrote a post about this, too, albeit coming from a different angle. http://danielmartineckhart.blogspot.com/2010/12/never-just-one.html

Got your blog linked on mine, of course - great stuff - rock on!
Scott at 2010-12-04 07:49:02:
@Daniel: Thanks for that link. Write because it makes you happy? Yes, despite how hard writing is, lonely, confounding, and all the rest, at some point, some part of us must like it, derive some measure of happiness from it. Although I suppose for some, it's an obsession which they loathe.

BTW, I've added your blog to my blogroll.
