Scott, if you haven't seen it, you MUST Netflix the season two episode of "Extras" that features Sir Ian as himself and his wonderful explanation of his process.

What's so nice about this is he shows exactly what the actor has to do to make it work. Instead of acting to this invisible, nebulous who-the-hell–knows–what-it-is VFX, Ian substitutes in the ball that's on the c-stand, there with him in that moment. And then he DEMANDS that the ball not bounce. Substitute "pass" for "ball" and bobs your uncle.
