Nolan *wants* to make films that make people think - and he has been doing so for quite a while...problem is that people aren't thinking what he wants them to think. Anyone capable of critical analysis that watches a Nolan film has no choice but to question the internal logic of the film and unsuccessfully try to make sense of it. What was the point of that? Why did this happen? That makes no sense. Hell, you'd get further trying to make sense of Inland Empire or Lost Highway.
Complexity is not necessary to make your audience think, unless you want them thinking about how poorly constructed your story is.
