A problem I've run into is -- if you want to write strong female leads, producers tend to have certain expectations about genre. Action / Adventure and Mystery movies all tend to have a male protagonist.

Horror movies are the one domain where you can write a female lead in a non-romantic role and no producer will question it -- or ask you to change her to a man.
