This is a great film (as is the follow up - they really work best together). I saw these when I was in film school and was absolutely blown away by them. Terrific, thoughtful storytelling.

Thank you for featuring these two masterpieces. I remember going to a double feature when Manon came out and they made a huge impression on me. Just fantastic.

I watched these about six months back because of your recommendation on the unique way they handled the twist/flashback. These movies were just beautiful. Great great films. So thanks again for the great recommendation.

I watched a lot of movie in French class in school, and this film is the only one I really remember. It also demonstrates why Gerard Depardieu is so popular. He's brilliant in this film.

Great pair of movies. Greek tragedy is right. I bought the DVDs to rewatch before going to rural SW France...

My question is: What are comparable American movies with the scope and depth of these two together? Do you think that movies like Legends of the Fall, or A River Runs Through It--self-consciously broad-sweep Western family melodramas--are the right parallels? Or is it The Godfather? Other nominees?
