@Joe Fowler: Certainly not. Horror is a strong genre in Hollywood because it has a strong core audience and, as the article notes, ROI on horror films can be significant. So keep writing them! Just make sure it's great.

Joe my man, NEVER stop writing horror specs. Seriously. I used to think horror's popularity was a cyclical kind of thing but any nibbles and callbacks I've gotten in the past two years or so have all been based off my horror specs more than anything else.

When I map out my long-range project plans for the year, I ALWAYS make sure to have at least one horror film in the hopper. And any subgenre will do just fine - - slasher, monster, zombie, vampire, cabin in the woods, monster in the cabin in the woods, giant monster outside of the cabin in the woods, slasher versus monster, cabin in the woods full of vampires.... see where I'm goin' here?

Hatchet II, Let me In, Saw 3D, possibly Night of the Demons... I honestly think they save the weakest horror films for October because they are not strong enough to stand alone during the rest of the year... Look for good horror Feb- May, with dvd release in Oct... Frozen from Adam Green just came out this past week and was awesome...

@LFGabel: "Buried" is probably one of the ones they included in TheWrap article as they said, I believe, there are 11 horror movies slated for release in October and I could only find 9. FWIW, IMDB lists "Buried" as Drama - Mystery - Thriller.

Let Me In will probably be the highest critically acclaimed. Not sure if it'll get the box office. Looks solid. But I'm not spending 12 bucks on it. I've seen Let the Right One In. But I am encouraging friends to see the remake. /shrug. (I wouldn't be surprised if it won the box office. I'm just on the fence a bit about it).

My Soul To Take looks like a Wes Craven film at its best. My money would be on this as the box office winner.

Buried will probably be made fun of. Ridiculed by hardcore Horror / Thriller fans. Will do decent business, but be called a flop, even though it will have made many times over its budget. Dollar in for dollar out -- Buried will probably have the highest percentage return.

Case 39 looks RETARDED.
