This reminds me of something I once noted watching AMC's Mad Men.

There's a scene between Sal, a closet homosexual and his wife at bedtime. Now Sal had recently at his workplace (the infamous Sterling Cooper ad agency) had an encounter which confronted his growing sense of frustrated sexuality which provided context for what unfolded in the scene between him and his wife.

What was wonderful about it, was the way the dynamic of the scene changed three times throughout it's play.


1) His wife enters and tries to seduce him. He turns her down. She is disappointed.

2) He then consoles her by talking about the pressures he's under at work, which she actually seems to buy and believe in. She then encourages him to open up about his inner world.

3) So after some prodding by his wife, he begins to ramble on about his job and ends up performing the dance that features in a commercial in front of his wife, who bears a look of being disconcerted by her husband performing in such a feminine, sexual manner.

I remember being tantalized by the above. A mastery of form and structure.
