Sarah Connor, hands down.
The Hakk at 2010-08-16 11:11:00:
Ripley!

Also would consider Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow... hmm...

or Lori Petty as the Tank Girl ;)
Peter Dwight at 2010-08-16 11:24:56:
haha Bruce Willis compared with Hit-Girl.. In his face! hehe.

Have to say Sarah Connor, but I like the mention of Milla Jovovich, huge fifth element and RE1 fan.

I've always wanted more female roles like from the original Le Femme Nikita, tough and gritty from the get go.
The Hakk at 2010-08-16 11:43:10:
@Peter Dwight

finally someone who likes Fifth Element as well.

Why not remake it with Chloe Moretz and Dolph Lundgren?
James at 2010-08-16 12:26:03:
Sarah Conner isn't an actress.

And there's the real problem.

The Expendables cashes in on the tough guy personae from the 80s and early 90s. These are actors who are solely known for being action stars.

Linda Hamilton is not synonymous with action movies. Neither is Sigourney Weaver.

Arnold, JCVD, Sly, Dolph Lungren, and a handful of 80s action icons ARE.

That's a big difference.

I am VERY pro female action movie. I think it's a largely untapped market. Both Tarantino and Cameron understand the power of the female action star. They dabble in it.

The problem is there just isn't a female Expendables equivalent because there aren't many females that are known for action roles.

@hakk

Well yeah. Flying cars, mega city, futuristic weapons.. and Milla Jovovich with red/orange hair in her white strap outfit.

For a freshman boy in high school, it was love at first sight. I think I saw that movie 3 times in theaters. I'm sure the boob shots helped too, but it was all fun!!
The Hakk at 2010-08-16 13:02:34:
@James

But isn't that a good thing that actresses like Sigouney Weaver can play hard-boiled action roles like Ripley and are also versatile enough to star in dramas or play the "damsel in distress" like in Ghostbusters.

The whole cast of The Expendables is made of action hero clichés. None of these guys, except Willis and Rourke, plays much else than alterations of their own stereotypes.

Women are probably not this much interested in picking up the same role over and over again. Well, of course they have their own clichés to dwell on.

I think it's a sheer numbers thing and a good for all of the actresses mentioned that they aren't known for being the go-to action girl, but that they have created characters that stand-out instead. If you are a female actress you don't want to become pigeon-holed as the "action chic" because there aren't going to be that many roles for you in the long run. Being the "rom com chic" or the "versatile actress" (hello, Nicole Kidman!) will be much more lucrative. Milla Jovovich, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, Uma Thurman, and Jennifer Garner have all played strong female action leads, but to become known only for that type of role would be like stabbing yourself with your own samurai sword in the foot. I think Jovovich has probably come the closest to getting pigeon-holed this way, but every now and again I see her playing someone softer - like her character in The Fourth Kind.
