My best advice is to write the best, most interesting, story you can (protect it) and forget about the rest. Ideas can't be protected anymore than history can but that doesn't stop folks from taking the risk that someone will think "big rock is about to hit Earth and kill everyone" is an amazing idea but your oil rig guys version blows so they are going to come up with something better.
