Whoah - so Hannibal grossed more than Silence of the Lambs? That's an eye-opener.

Two of my favorite thrillers are The Silent Partner and The Laughing Policeman.

There's a book called I Was Dora Suarez about a detective investigating the link between the killings of two women and a mob hit. It has echoes of Laura and probably the most depraved villain I've ever come across in any book, film, or play besides Judge Glanton in Blood Meridian. I'd nominate Sean Penn for that role, and Ray Winstone as the protagonist.

Any of Jack Higgins' Sean Dillon series; F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack books; and, of course, anything by Dean Koontz.
