By "big" I just meant significant, whether internally or externally. Sometimes, an ending will happen and you'll say "Wait... that's it?" An example I'd use is the movie I Love You, Man -- I thought it was hilarious, but was wholly underwhelmed by the ending.

I usually think of my ending first, because it's the last thing I leave my reader with. Then I start working the story backwards on how I got to that point.

So maybe you could try of thinking of the ending you would like then mold everything else to fit.

Doesn't always work but it's an option.
