To my mind, when I think of poignant father son exchanges, and perhaps this has already been mentioned, I immediately think of "The Godfather". When Brando is talking with Michael in the garden. He says to him, and I'm paraphrasing, "I never wanted this for you". Michael is the Don's favorite son, and had high hopes for him beyond "the family business". There's a lot of subtext in this scene. I think it really gets to the core of what much of the movie is about.
