Interesting case (and certainly a good germ of a movie idea).

There was a case here in Texas last year in which a man (who was also a police officer) got mad at his neighbors and posted several of the neighbor's belongings (like a basketball net and a trampoline, etc. that were in the neighbor's yard and on his porch) for free on Craigslist (the ad said "don't ring the bell. Just pick up the items.")

The police said there was nothing the man/officer could be charged with because it's not theft if you give away someone else's stuff for no personal financial gain (I find this to be dubious reasoning, but the man/officer never faced any kind of reprimand).

I like the 'Neighbors' comparison -- I saw that in the theater back in '81 and I remember my friend leaning over and saying, "We're seeing a new type of comedy". Not sure I agreed with him but it sure was a strange film.
